| This information is taken mainly from Sands and McDougall Directories of SA. Until 1941, the directories had a summary of important information about the town at the top of the entry, but then it became just a list of names with some occupations included beside the names. Not all townspeople were listed- mostly only the employed, of whom most were males. Often the details were out of date and incorrect. Newspaper advertisements show that the information was collected at the end of a year up to about February the next year and then the directories were published. Some articles say information was collected by door knocking but that didn't always happen. I mentioned doctors and chemists above when they were in the lists because not many of them were ever in Port Germein. The focus is on the town rather than neighbouring farming areas, because that is where I lived and farming has been covered quite well in other publications. I summarised trades and more uncommon or historical occupations but not those of farmer, labourer or fisherman. Older directories seem to be more accurate and detailed than modern ones, partly because the population was smaller and the sources fewer. Sands and McDougall did not have Pt Germein included in their country areas after the 1970 directory, and the directories all ended in 1973. Other references were : "Hotels and Publicans in South Australia 1836-1993" by J.L. Hoad, "The Jetties of South Australia Past and Present" by Neville Collins, "Where Have the Children Gone?" by Norman Haines published for the 1981 school centenary. Details about the Palais came from minutes of the District Council of Port Germein from 1927 to 1965. A little more recent information came from phone books which were organised by town until 1978. After that, people were arranged in alphabetical order within telephone districts and a snapshot of small towns was thus lost. Some details of the Post Office were added 11-4-2015, taken from "the Post, Telegraph and Teleohone Offices of South Australia and the Northern Territory" by Martin Walker, 2004. School attendances come from the school's admissions registers and include all children who have attended the school at any time throughout a year. There were many seasonal and itinerant workers and the population was quite fluid at times depending on employment. Compiled by L. Nordestgaard. | |||||||||||
